With the advent of technology that allows the recording of visual information in electronic format, a window has opened on a whole new world of imaging possibilities. Much of this world is good, but some is not.
Currently, even the very highest resolution digital cameras cannot duplicate the clarity found in properly exposed and processed emulsion based prints. For small prints up to 5"x7" or 8"x10", digital imaging can be adequate, depending on the subject and the viewing distance. Clearly the portability of images in digital format via email and diskette has great appeal, but getting the output from those sources is limited to viewing on a computer monitor at low resolution (compared to prints) or a near photo-quality printer.
Another issue that arises with digital imaging is the ability to manipulate the image electronically to alter what is represented. This can be an advantage as when sharpening of details or changing contrast allows the viewer to gain more information from the image. It can also be a liability when the image is altered in order to hide, distort or enhance a particular feature or scene to suit the point of view of the advocate. The ease with which digital images can be altered is the primary reason that Summit Professional Resources does not utilize digital cameras in the recording of our clients images. However, we can supply our clients with digital image files via high resolution scanning of the negatives. By having the negatives, we have a means by which the authenticity of the digital image can be verified.
Please review some samples of our work and feel free to ask about what we can do for you in terms of specialty photography such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
